XIAOMI Redmi 14C 8GB 256GB

Redmi 14C Overview

The Redmi 14C, by Xiaomi, is a budget-friendly smartphone that balances affordability and performance. It is designed to cater to everyday mobile needs while providing a sleek design, solid build quality, and modern features; the Redmi 14C stands out in the crowded budget smartphone market.

This review will explore the Redmi 14C’s features, including its design, display, camera capabilities, performance, battery life, and much more. By the end of the review, you will understand this smartphone’s offerings, where it excels, and its limitations.

Design and Build Quality of the Redmi 14C

The Redmi 14C’s design is one of its standout features, especially considering its price point. Xiaomi has ensured that the device appeals to users who appreciate form and function. The phone, which measures 171.9 x 77.8 x 8.2 mm (6.77 x 3.06 x 0.32 in), is comfortable to hold despite its large screen size, striking a balance between usability and immersive viewing.

Material and Build Quality

The Redmi 14C is built with a glass front and a plastic frame, a common choice for budget smartphones. However, Xiaomi adds a touch of luxury with either a glass back or a silicone polymer (eco-leather) back, giving users a choice between two styles. The silicone polymer back has a soft, eco-friendly feel, while the glass back provides a premium look, making the phone feel more expensive than it is.

The Redmi 14C’s weight varies depending on the material used: 204g, 207g, and 211g. This slightly heavier build adds a reassuring sense of durability without feeling overly cumbersome.

The device supports dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by) functionality, making it practical for users who must balance work and personal numbers or manage multiple carriers. Additionally, Xiaomi has released the phone in four stunning color options—Midnight Black, Sage Green, dreamy purple, and starry blue—which ensures that the device looks stylish while offering variety to match users’ preferences.

Display of the Redmi 14C

The Redmi 14C has a 6.88-inch IPS LCD that offers an immersive visual experience, especially for users who enjoy consuming media or playing games on their smartphones. With an 84% screen-to-body ratio, the display dominates the front of the phone, providing plenty of screen real estate for viewing content.

Refresh Rate and Brightness

One of the highlights of the Redmi 14C’s display is its 120Hz refresh rate. This is a rare feature in budget smartphones, and it significantly enhances the user experience, especially when scrolling through social media, browsing the web, or playing fast-paced games. The high refresh rate ensures that the screen feels smooth and responsive, adding a touch of fluidity that is often missing in more affordable devices.

The display offers 450 nits of typical brightness and can reach 600 nits in High Brightness Mode (HBM). While the brightness levels are adequate for indoor and shaded outdoor use, it may struggle in direct sunlight, especially compared to higher-end models. Still, the Redmi 14C does a respectable job at maintaining visibility in most lighting conditions.

Resolution and Display Quality

The Redmi 14C’s display resolution of 720 x 1640 pixels (~260 ppi density) is one area where it reveals its budget nature. While the resolution suits casual usage, users accustomed to higher resolutions, such as Full HD or QHD, might notice a slight lack of sharpness. However, screen quality is sufficient for watching videos, social media, and everyday browsing.

Xiaomi has also ensured that the display is TÜV Rheinland certified for low blue light emission, reducing eye strain during prolonged use. This is especially beneficial for users who spend extended periods reading, watching videos, or gaming on their phones.

Camera System of the Redmi 14C

The Redmi 14C packs a surprisingly good camera system for a budget smartphone that can compete with other phones in this price range. It offers dual rear cameras and a front-facing selfie camera, catering to users who enjoy capturing moments on the go without needing professional-grade quality.

Main Camera Setup

The Redmi 14C sports a dual-camera system on the rear, featuring a 50MP primary camera and a 2MP depth sensor. The 50MP sensor captures detailed and vibrant images, particularly in well-lit conditions. While it does not deliver the same level of detail as flagship smartphones, the camera performs admirably for most casual photography needs. The f/1.8 aperture on the primary lens ensures it captures enough light to produce bright and clear photos, even in moderately low-light conditions.

The secondary 2MP depth sensor works with the primary camera to create bokeh effects in portrait mode, blurring the background and bringing the subject into focus. While the depth sensor is basic, it does a decent job separating the subject from the background, producing aesthetically pleasing portrait shots.

There is also an auxiliary 0.08 MP lens, which further enhances image quality, particularly in-depth and focus, though its impact is minimal in day-to-day photography. Other features of the Redmi 14C’s camera setup include LED flash and HDR support, ensuring that users can capture balanced photos even in tricky lighting conditions. The camera also supports 1080p video recording at 30fps, enabling users to shoot full HD videos.

Selfie Camera

The front-facing 13MP selfie camera has an f/2.0 aperture and supports HDR. It performs well for social media selfies and video calls, capturing detailed and clear images. Like the rear camera, the selfie camera also supports 1080p video recording at 30fps, which is ideal for creating high-quality video content or attending virtual meetings. Overall, the camera setup on the Redmi 14C delivers solid performance for everyday photography and social media content creation. While it may not compete with higher-end devices, it meets the needs of budget-conscious users looking for reliable camera functionality.

Performance of the Redmi 14C

Under the hood, the Redmi 14C is powered by the MediaTek Helio G81 Ultra chipset, which provides adequate performance for most everyday tasks. Whether browsing the web, streaming videos, playing casual games, or running social media apps, the Helio G81 Ultra handles it easily.

CPU and GPU

The Octa-core 2.0 GHz CPU paired with the Mali-G52 MC2 GPU offers smooth multitasking and decent graphics processing. While it may not deliver the raw power of more premium chipsets like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series, the Helio G81 Ultra is optimized for energy efficiency and balanced performance.

The performance is more than sufficient for casual users. However, when it comes to more demanding applications such as high-end gaming or running multiple intensive apps simultaneously, the Redmi 14C  struggles a bit. The Mali-G52 GPU can handle most games at moderate settings, but users should not expect top-tier performance in graphically intensive titles.

Operating System: Android 14 and HyperOS

The Redmi 14C runs on Android 14 with Xiaomi’s HyperOS skin on top. HyperOS is designed to offer a fluid user experience, with added customization options, enhanced privacy controls, and improved performance optimizations. The UI is user-friendly and intuitive, and it is easy to navigate, even for those who may not be familiar with Xiaomi’s custom OS. However, one downside of the Redmi 14C is the presence of bloatware—pre-installed apps that may not be useful for all users. While these can be uninstalled or disabled, they can take up valuable storage and slightly affect performance.

RAM and Storage Options

The Redmi 14C offers several RAM and storage configuration options, giving users the flexibility to choose a variant that best suits their needs:

• 128GB storage + 4GB RAM
• 128GB storage + 6GB RAM
• 128GB storage + 8GB RAM
• 256GB storage + 4GB RAM
• 256GB storage + 8GB RAM

With eMMC 5.1 storage, the device offers adequate read/write speeds for most everyday tasks. However, users looking for faster data transfer or app launch speeds may notice the difference compared to UFS storage typically found in higher-end models. The Redmi 14C also includes a dedicated microSDXC card slot, allowing users to expand storage up to 512GB. This is an excellent feature for users who need extra space for media, apps, and files.

Battery Life of the Redmi 14C

One of the most impressive aspects of the Redmi 14C is its battery life. Its 5160mAh non-removable battery ensures the phone lasts throughout the day, even with moderate to heavy use.

Battery Longevity

With the energy-efficient Helio G81 Ultra chipset and rate display resolution, the Redmi 14C delivers longevity. The phone can last and recharge when browsing the internet, watching videos, or playing games. For lighter users, it can last up to two days on a single charge.

Charging Speed

The Redmi 14C supports 18W wired fast charging, which is decent for a phone in this price range. While it may not be as quick as higher-end smartphones with 30W or 65W charging, the 18W charging is adequate, taking the phone from 0% to 50% in approximately 45-50 minutes. Additionally, the phone supports Power Delivery (PD), ensuring more efficient and quicker charging when paired with compatible chargers.

Connectivity and Communication of the Redmi 14C

Regarding connectivity, the Redmi 14C has robust communication options that ensure users stay connected, whether for work or personal use.

Network Compatibility

The Redmi 14C supports 4G LTE connectivity, offering fast download and upload speeds for browsing, streaming, and gaming. Although it does not support 5G, the 4G capabilities are sufficient for most users, especially in regions where 5G networks are not widely available.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

The device comes with Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, supporting dual-band connectivity, which means it can operate on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. This ensures a stable and fast Wi-Fi connection for smoother browsing and streaming experiences. Regarding Bluetooth, the Redmi 14C features Bluetooth 5.4, which offers improved range and data transfer speeds compared to older Bluetooth versions. Users can easily connect to wireless headphones, speakers, or Bluetooth-enabled devices without worrying about connectivity issues.

Other Communication Features

The Redmi 14C supports GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, and BDS, ensuring accurate location tracking and navigation.
NFC is included, but it is market/region-dependent, meaning that not all versions of the Redmi 14C have this feature.
An FM Radio is also present, allowing users to tune into their favorite local stations directly from the device.
Security Features and Sensors of the Redmi 14C

The Redmi 14C has essential security features, including a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. This fast and reliable sensor makes it easy for users to unlock their devices with a simple touch. Additionally, the Redmi 14C includes a range of sensors, such as an accelerometer, compass, and virtual proximity sensing. These sensors enhance the overall functionality of the device, improving experiences like navigation and gaming.
